Students of ALS or Alternative Learning in Sta.Rosa are youths and adults, mostly from Mangyan communities living in the mountains of Sitio Libliban and Matingkay. ALS is a program of Department of Education which aims to provide education for those whose do not access to education, giving second chance to out-of-school youths and adults who missed formal education in schools. As lessons are modular and flexible, learning can be held at any time and any place depending on the time availability of learners , their level of literacy and convenience of the students in the community.
The ALS class in Sta.Rosa has thirty (30) learners. Classes are conducted twice a week – every Tuesday and Friday, giving youth learners time to help parents at work and adult learners chance to work, mostly in the mountains and farms. Their classes are being held in a church. Since most learners are adults with families who do not have regular source of income and depends on the forest resources for living, giving them some food, clothing and school supplies could somehow ease financial burden of education especially when resources in the mountains and farms are low.
We would like to thank all our generous donors, teachers and families in the community who made the activity possible. Below are the pictures taken from the activity
